Design Diaries: The South of France with our Design Director

With it’s insta-worthy aesthetic of turquoise coves, vintage convertibles, VIP beach clubs, historical buildings, and designer stores, the South of France is a source of aspiration and inspiration for many – us included.

Last month our Design Director, Jamie Ashkar, checked into the La Bastide de Saint-Tropez hotel for a “work trip” (can you believe he gets to call it that?!) to inspire and ignite the design direction for future collections. From the laidback style of the laissez faire locals to the opulent wardrobes of the five-star visitors alongside the architecture, landscape, and design, here’s a snippet of how his time in the French Riveria went down…

What was the purpose of the trip?

To become immersed in the European summer, and collating inspiration for forward collections. We find designing in season really allows us to design with purpose and intention.

What inspired you while you were there?

Art, architecture, and interiors, with a focus on colour and texture. I am also drawn to people – both the aspirational and everyday girl. I love seeing individual style, and discovering new combinations that feel fresh and influential.

Talk us through your creative approach:

I spend weeks pulling inspiration from all places with no limitations, just anything and everything that I feel excited about. Then, I build a high level moodboard which sets the tone for the creative direction. From there, I layer in brand design, how to build it into a season, and most importantly, our customer.

What are your top three DISSH pieces from the July Collection?

It would have to be the Zahara Fringed Top and Pant set in lemon and the Liv Collared Vest in cream. Both super feminine and pieces that will shift easily into
spring.

How would you describe your personal style?

I have a very uniform approach to dressing: it’s black on black. I invest in quality pieces that are interchangeable, so I have the ability to build multiple looks. I have been known to pull out a white shirt on occasion while on holidays – it’s a rare sight!

Where is next on your travel wish-list?

Marrakesh, Morocco for its rich culture and history.
