As our product assortments have grown, so too has our accessories range supporting DISSH collections. Namely, one of our favourite sunglasses range Shevoke, a brand partner we established in late 2020 and are so grateful to be in collaboration with. We sat down with Shevoke founder Lisa Hyde, to shine the spotlight on female-owned and led brands, and the challenges faced along the way.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and the brand?
I’m originally from a small beach town in Queensland (Australia) called Coolum Beach. I moved to Sydney to grow my business back in 2014. I’ve always loved designing, I used to make clothing before I started designing eyewear. From a young age I knew I wanted to run my own business and just never gave up on that dream. My first two businesses didn’t go exactly to plan however I’m grateful for the mistakes I’ve learnt along the way, as that’s what has helped me get Shevoke to where it is today.
Take us back to the start, and how Shevoke began?
There was certainly a big gap in the market for designer eyewear at an affordable price. Shevoke started back in 2014 and it was really because I couldn’t find any sunglasses that I loved. When starting the brand I wanted to create something different, an adorable sunglass for everyone without compromising on quality.
You’re paving the way for many young women in business, what does it mean to you to be a female founder? Also, can you tell us how you become an entrepreneur? Was it something you always envisioned for yourself?
I am proud to be a female founder. I encourage all women out there who are thinking about starting a business to give it a go. From what I’ve learned, most stumble into entrepreneurship rather than make a choice. I believe it’s about fulfilling a need and taking advantage of an opportunity rather than a career choice.
Today, Shevoke is a vastly successful sunglass brand, can you tell us who your biggest advocate was in the early days?
I was blessed with very supportive and encouraging parents. I worked at the local grocery store when I was 13 and started my first business by the age of 18. I’m a Capricorn and that pretty much says it all. I love to work and set goals. My parents have played a massive part in giving me the confidence to believe in myself.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?
I’ve never had a business mentor, so I’ve had to learn everything as I go. I face challenges every day but trusting in your gut and learning from mistakes is how I’ve continued to grow Shevoke.
How did the DISSH x Shevoke partnership come about?
I used to live on the Goal Coast and shopped at DISSH all the time, so when the buyers reached out to me to stock Shevoke eyewear I knew it was a perfect fit for us.
As a mum, how do you manage to juggle balancing motherhood and work life?
I won’t sugar coat it, being a mum and running a business isn’t easy. The first step is having a good support system around you, whether that’s you family, friends, or staff. Unfortunately, I don’t have any family close by to help out so I’ve had to rely on my amazing staff & our nanny. The first year is the hardest, just finding energy some days was hard. All I can say is “routine is key”.
