As you drive into the breathtaking Kalbar Sunflower Farm, you are greeted by hundreds of bright flowers in full bloom, staring at a sea of sunshine, immediately you feel a sense of joy. This incredible location really resonated with DISSH for so many reasons. As a brand born out of the sunshine state (QLD, Australia), we are always chasing the sun. From our approach to design, to our campaigns and product launches, our collections are deeply rooted in the Australian landscape and lifestyle, so it only made sense to debut SUNMOTION in our very own backyard. After hearing their paralleled journey, we were so excited to partner with the Kalbar Sunflower Farm, founded by business owners Russel and Jenny Jenner.
After a challenging few seasons running low on water to irrigate their farm, the Jenner family were forced to pivot from growing lucerne to sunflowers, a drought-hardy crop. When asked about the Jenners, Owner & Director Lucy Henry-Hicks said, “When we saw what the Jenners' had created, we instantly felt a connection. What beauty to be born out of adversity. We love to celebrate those who aren’t afraid to take a risk, follow their instincts and trust their vision. We were so excited and inspired to work closely with such a beautiful family to bring our special concept to life.” Like the Jenner’s, DISSH were also pushed to pause during the pandemic and evaluate our vision and impact, kicking off this next phase of evolution with global expansion, a redefined design and manufacturing process, and a greater focus on community and sustainability.
Lead by our fearless leader, Lucy, at the forefront of this new vision, the brand has undertaken so many exciting changes in all phases, like monumental phases of the sun. “Sunflowers are not only bold and beautiful, but as they mature, they grow to follow and face the sun. As a brand we’ve seen a lot of growth in this last year and our direction is really set on being ‘sun chasers’ – it felt like the perfect location to bring this next collection to life.”
An amalgamation of all these things, our SUNMOTION Global Runway is inspired by the relaxed, effortless cool girl, with a love for feminine silhouettes and laidback luxury. Taking the best of each era, with a nod to ‘70s, ‘90s, and now, these pieces are made to become, and remain, wardrobe staples for seasons to come, with a considered design approach that remains at our core.
Over the last 12 months, both businesses have seen huge success in making crucial changes, and we’re so excited for what’s to come. We loved working alongside the Jenner’s to showcase this beautiful part of the world, the Scenic Rim, in our home state of Queensland. Lucy muses “After two long years tackling the many challenges presented by COVID, the sunflower represents fresh beginnings and a bright future. It’s hard not to smile when you see a sunflower.”
